PLACES

The Farm: It's where we park our rig except in the middle of the summer when we rent a space here in Metro Denver. We use 4400 S. Clay St. Storage for a secure parking space in town. It has limited access which isn't necessarily convenient, but it's more secure that way. But the farm is the best! We are 3 miles off the highway, then back down a 1/2 mile drive and behind some trees. It's 15 miles away from a town of 75 people, far out on the Eastern plains of Colorado. We are close to Bonny Lake State Park which is nice.

Bonny: This is the largest state park in Northeast Colorado. It's well kept, but the water is low. It's been on the dry side out here for years. We go there frequently because it's close, and it's close for my two sons as well. This area of Eastern Colorado was late getting on the grid. Rural electrification occurred around 1952, and crank phones were used until the mid 60's. We've met a lot of nice people here. It has paved loops for the campsites near the main office, and the rest is more or less hardpacked sand and gravel.

Bird City KS: Where there's an antique steam engine & thresher show every July. Certainly not the largest show of it's kind in the country, but a lot of fun. They have a great turn out, and there's free parking in the field adjacent to the grounds. This is extreme Northwest KS, and other towns in the area include St. Francis, Goodland, Atwood, and Colby. We go to the stock car races in Goodland from time to time and St. Francis hosts a Stearman Fly-in annually that's very well attended. In general, a fine place to cruise around!

Empire Lake CO: This is a private irrigation lake with water rights from the very early 1900's. The land around the lake is mostly private, and the owners sell memberships for camping. Also, the irrigation operator charges a nominal fee for boat permits. We are occasional guests of a relative, and usually spend a couple of weekends there each season. The ground is extremely sandy, and I've almost buried the rig there trying to get in closer. A family friend landed this plane on the beach.
